Kyle Busch and Monster Energy Team 1st at Darlington

Five-Time Nationwide Series Winners Tame the ‘Lady’

 

Kyle Busch and the No. 54 Monster Energy team won Friday night’s VFW Sports Clip 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. The victory was Busch’s 56th in 252 series starts and the team’s fifth series win and seventh top-10 finish in nine starts this season. Busch accomplished the win from the pole position, the last driver to accomplish the feat, previously doing it in 2011.

 

For the second time this year, the No. 54 team accomplished a victory from the pole-qualifying position, previously mastered at Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway, Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA and now Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. Busch started from the pole in Darlington and led the field four times for 107 of the 147-lap event.

Kyle Busch and Monster Energy Team Third at RIR
Richmond Finish Sixth Top-Three in Six Starts for Busch

Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) driver Kyle Busch and the No. 54 Monster Energy Camry team gained points and maintained their Owner’s Point Standings lead with a third-place finish at Richmond (VA.) International Raceway Friday night. It was Busch’s sixth top-three finish in the last six starts with his JGR NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) crew this season. The soon to be 28-year-old’s 251st career start in the series, brings his 135th top-five and 169th top-10 finish.

During initial on-track activity Thursday and Friday, the No. 54 Toyota team felt their Camry was strong, showing third-quick in practice one and topping the speed chart fastest in the second and final practice session. Crew Chief Adam Stevens was prepared for changing track conditions during practice and the race, commenting early in the weekend the biggest challenge of Richmond’s .75-mile oval is managing tire wear, especially with varying elements of a morning practice session and an evening race. That sentiment would later be realized.
