Five-Time Nationwide Series Winners Tame the ‘Lady’

Kyle Busch and the No. 54 Monster Energy team won Friday night’s VFW Sports Clip 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. The victory was Busch’s 56th in 252 series starts and the team’s fifth series win and seventh top-10 finish in nine starts this season. Busch accomplished the win from the pole position, the last driver to accomplish the feat, previously doing it in 2011.

For the second time this year, the No. 54 team accomplished a victory from the pole-qualifying position, previously mastered at Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway, Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA and now Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. Busch started from the pole in Darlington and led the field four times for 107 of the 147-lap event.

Furniture Row Racing Driver Sets Track Record

DARLINGTON, S.C. (May 10, 2013) — Kurt Busch blistered the daunting Darlington Raceway oval Friday, setting a track record en route to claiming the No. 1 starting position for Saturday night’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 Sprint Cup Series race.
In Friday’s time trials at the 1.366-mile, egg-shaped oval, Busch’s No. 78 Furniture Row/Serta Chevrolet SS posted a lap time and speed of 27.032 seconds at 181.918 miles per hour.  The previous lap record of 181.254 mph was set by Kasey Kahne in 2011.
It was the 16th career pole for Busch, who won his first career pole at Darlington in September 2001. It was also the second career pole for Furniture Row Racing. The last time the Denver-based team took the No. 1 qualifying spot was in May 2008 at Talladega Superspeedway with driver Joe Nemechek.  Read Full Article →

After months of frustration, Jimmie Johnson gave Rick Hendrick his 200th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory, running away from the rest of the field on a green-white-checkered-flag restart that took the Bojangles’ Southern 500 one lap past its scheduled distance.

On Saturday night at Darlington Raceway, Johnson ended his own winless streak of 16 races, a drought of relative epic proportions for the five-time champion. The victory was Johnson’s 56th, breaking a tie with Rusty Wallace for eighth on the all-time list.

Hamlin ran second, followed by Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr.
